FAQs

Am I going to see the lakes frozen? Can I swim in them?

The lakes in the Rockies usually freeze by the end of November and stay frozen until April. However, it is important to note that this depends on the weather conditions that vary each year, so the timings cannot be guaranteed. The beauty of travelling to the Rocky Mountains during fall or spring is that you never know the wonderful views you’ll get to see!

While you might not see the lakes frozen on this tour, we strongly advise against swimming in them, as the water temperature can be extremely low.

What is the weather like in the Rockies during fall and spring?

The weather in the mountains is very unpredictable, so it’s hard to give an accurate answer. During the fall season (October & November departures), temperatures are mild cold; around 10°C, so it is recommended to pack warm clothes, thermal and waterproof layers, and warm shoes or boots to ensure you are comfortable and enjoy your adventure to the fullest!

In spring (April departure), when the scenery is shaking up the snow and flowers are blooming, you will likely find nice, sunny days and mild temperatures, although there is a high chance of light rain. For travelling during these months, we recommend wearing multiple thin layers to adapt to the ever-changing weather.

What makes this tour different from the Rockies Summer or Winter Explorer tours?

The Rocky Mountains are a breathtaking view any time of the year, and there is something magical about the seasons in between summer and winter. The Rockies Fall & Spring Explorer tour has limited departures, and they are the only time of the year that you can get to see the transition between the snowy mountains and blue lakes. During fall, you will likely encounter a mesmerizing show of reds, oranges and yellows in the National Parks. During spring, you will see the icy lakes starting to melt and the flowers blooming around them.

Due to the changes in weather, some winter and summer activities are closed during fall and spring, which allows for the itinerary of this tour to include unique activities and stops for these seasons, as well as a pizza and bowling party in downtown Banff!

Am I guaranteed to see wildlife?

Wild animals may change their behaviour and lifestyle when there’s a change of season and weather in the Rockies. You may be able to see some species all year long, like mountain goats or eagles, while some others need to hibernate, like bears. During the fall season, some wild animals are going into hibernation, so there is a possibility you see them if the weather is not too cold. During spring, bears and cubs start to come out of their dens. If you do come across wildlife, remember to never feed them and to not stand too close to them, as they may feel threatened in their own home.

While we can never guarantee wildlife sightings on any tour, there is a very high chance you will spot different creatures along the way!
